AFFM Applauds President Trump’s National Policy Framework on Artificial Intelligence

On Friday, the Trump Administration released a comprehensive national legislative framework on artificial intelligence (AI). AFFM Executive Director David Ibsen issued the following statement:

Americans for Free Markets applauds the Trump Administration’s approach to developing a market-centered national AI policy that encourages American leadership in innovation and adoption while protecting fundamental rights.

Without a federal framework, states will likely implement conflicting regulatory requirements, complicating AI development and adoption by businesses operating across states and limiting American competitiveness. This framework also advances important child protections, safeguards intellectual property, prevents censorship, streamlines permitting, and advances AI innovation and workforce readiness.

This is a positive and needed step in encouraging competitiveness while guaranteeing protections for American businesses and families. If implemented, the framework will support AI development, adoption, investment, and innovation through policies like streamlined permitting that let business advance without letting government get in the way. The framework also wisely calls for any AI related regulation or rulemaking to come from existing regulatory bodies, not new and unnecessary bureaucracies that could overburden businesses and stifle innovation. We look forward to continued progress from the Administration and Congress on this issue.

In the announcement, the White House emphasized the need for federal AI policy to advance national protections for American businesses and families. “Importantly, this framework can succeed only if it is applied uniformly across the United States. A patchwork of conflicting state laws would undermine American innovation and our ability to lead in the global AI race.”

Michael Kratsios, White House Director of Science and Technology Policy, supported the measure on social media, underscoring “…we need one federal AI policy, not a 50 state patchwork. This gets us there.”
